General Motors will build a full range of electric trucks at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant, including those with “true off-road capability,” according to a press conference this morning. With a wink and nod, he also recommended watching the super bowl, which is rumored to be the platform where GM will announce more details on the vehicles it will produce – including a Hummer truck.
GM President Mark Reuss made the bold statement that “Our electric pickup will do everything a pickup truck owner wants it to do” – including off-road ability and towing. He also mentioned that more “basic” models would be available. The statement comes as many in the pick-up truck segment were concerned with limited range, time to charge, and what affect towing has on EV performance.
The battery platform that GM will use is designed to work with multiple brands and multiple segments. By moving so much of their lineup to electric, GM is hoping to “bring EVs to the mass market.”
The announcement was less about upcoming vehicles so much as the $2.2B investment in the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, and to signal that “Michigan is open for business” and that GM’s most technologically advanced plants in their own backyard.
