Growing up in Northern Indiana in the small town where HUMVEEs are manufactured, it was always fascinating to see the paint schemes change with the global political climate. During the First Gulf War the plant’s holding areas went from a sea of green to a desert of sand-colored vehicles. Now, amid calls for a troop surge in Afghanistan, it appears AM General has the appropriately colored vehicles ready to ship.
The color scheme is matched to Afghanistan’s mountainous areas, and incorporates both green and sand colors – a color that prior to conflict in that region had not been mass-produced.
While the vehicle holding areas near the plant are still full of sand-color vehicles and a few green ones, HUMVEEs were spotted across town near AM General’s off-road training facility where HUMMER’s official driving academy is located.

That is a cool picture! Are there any other unique attributes to these “Afghanistan-influenced” Humvees?
Well — there was a box covered by a tarp on each one. Not sure if it housed anything really special – maybe extra accessories? Also – I believe all of these were the two-door variety instead of the typical 4-door – an indication they’re designed to carry more cargo than personnel.
