No Cell Phones. No GPS. No trail support crew. Many offroad racers would say, “no thanks,” to such a race, but two American women are up to the challenge and traveling to Morocco in a few weeks to take on the Rally of the Gazelles – the only all-women offroad rally race in the world. Their vehicle of choice – a HUMMER H3.
Emily Miller and Wendy Fisher make up Team Miller Fisher – the only team from the U.S. to compete in the grueling race across the most difficult terrain that Morocco has to offer.
Miller is no stranger to the HUMMER community after her debut several years ago as a driver with Team HUMMER and Rod Hall Racing. In 2008, she became the first female driver in history to pilot the entire “Vegas to Reno” off-road race, and even more recently shared driving duties during Team HUMMER’s Baja 1000 run which they scored two first-place finishes.
Fisher has a competitive streak as well – having spent seven years on the U.S. Ski Team and earning a spot on the 1992 Winter Olympic Team. After leaving the national team, Fisher entered the realm of extreme skiing where she won two world titles. Fisher has also competed in the Gravity Games and X-games, and even been featured in extreme skiing films and movies.
The Rally of Gazelles is a little bit different than traditional off-road races, in that it doesn’t put emphasis on the speed of completion, but rather on navigating, which is done with maps from the 1950s and a compass – no GPS maps or cell phones are allowed. The competitor that has driven the least amount of kilometers is the winner – not the least amount of time.
Choosing your own route is the theme of the rally. Through the dunes or around them? Over the mountains or around them? These are the questions that navigators and drivers will ask themselves, but in the end, whichever team makes it from point A to point B with the least mileage wins.
We’re sure Team Miller Fisher will represent the United States and the HUMMER Community well – best of luck at the 2010 Rally of the Gazelles!
